2009 first lunar eclipse Feb 09 east asia

lunar-eclipsea.jpg

lunareclipse4a.jpg

A penumbra refers to a partially shaded outer region of a shadow that an object casts. A penumbral eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the faint penumbral portion of the earth’s shadow. The lunar surface is not completely shadowed by the earth’s umbra (darkest part of a shadow). Instead, observers see only the slightest dimming near the lunar limb closest to the umbra. The eclipse may be undetectable unless at least half of the moon enters the penumbra

my question for today’s edition of AF is ” for you, what is the most useful herb that you have in your garden, if there is any?

……………………………………..basil is in the middle………………………..

Health benefits

Oregano

is high in antioxidant activity, due to a high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids.useful for relieving children’s coughs. The leaves and flowering stems are strongly antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic. It is one of the best antiseptics because of its high thymol content.

Basil

is a culinary herb that’s popular in many Italian dishes.
The most common use of basil is for cooking, such as in tomato sauce, pesto, or vinegars. It also can be sprinkled on salads and sliced tomatoes, either whole or chopped. Don’t chop the leaves, but tear them instead for the most flavor. To make oil for salads, pound the fresh leaves and mix with a good salad or vegetable oil. Leaves also can be dried and stored in salt.
A drop of basil oil on shirtsleeves will help counteract mental fatigue.

The Pandan Leaf

comes from the Screwpine tree, which can be found in Madagascar, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the tropical areas of Australia. The medicinal uses for this tree are as follows: The entire plant is used as a diuretic, the roots have anti-diabetic properties, and the leaves are used for treating diseases of the skin. In cooking, the leaf is used in making grass green Pandan cake which is similar to the American sponge cake. The Pandan leaf has also been used in rice and making different type of curries. For festive holidays and ceremonies, Pandan is used with the essences of rose to flavor spicy rice dishes

Malunggay

-Moringa

can rebuild weak bones, enrich anemic blood and enable a malnourished mother to nurse her starving baby. Ounce for ounce, it has the calcium of four glasses of milk, the vitamin C of seven oranges and the potassium of three bananas.
Malungggay or Moringa has quadruple the beta carotene, which is good for the eyes and effective against cancer.”
Medicinal uses:
Bruises and sprains: Crush or pound 10-12 leaves and apply over the ankles, wrists or affected areas for 30 minutes, three times daily. Use a bandage to hold the poultice in place.
Carminative: Take decoctions of leaves.
Headache: Pound leaves and apply over temples and nape.
Mild bleeding of wounds: Wash the young leaves; crush and extract the juice. Drop a few drops of the juice directly on the wound.

Papaya

-has a sweetish taste and is very rich in vitamins A, B and C. The juice of the papaya contains papain, a protein splitting enzyme used as a meat tenderizer.is tonic, stomachic, stimulant, laxative, digestive, and rejuvenative. Ripe fruit is very useful in digestive disorders and if taken regularly, it cures all sorts of stomach troubles.

Ever since I was a child, I’m already an admirer of the skies and all its being. And today, after watching the spectacular and intangible beauty of the full moon, I started watching Maalaala Mo Kaya. “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (do you remember?)is a Filipino drama program which was first aired in 1991 and has since been the longest running drama anthology on Philippine television.

Tonight, It was a gruesome episode of cruelty of a father to his own family especially to his oldest son. It is a story of a father who does not provide food for his family, instead, he used his earnings for a drink or for a bet in a cockfight. And when he is intoxicated, he beat his 5 children in the middle of the night after awakening them from sleep.I would like to think of the story, as exaggerating because if its true, I can not imagine the kind of father that the letter sender had. In fact, the two young children died of hunger.

It’s pathetic that those children were not able to enjoy the simplest things in life, the most basic of all, they were not able to enjoy not only the material things but the phenomenon and the beauty of nature such as this full moon.

May God bless them and may their souls rest in peace!

Blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year -

It’s good to be back after a while. Wishing everyone a better year of prosperity, peace and happiness!

getting ready for christmas

hana_tammy
Worldwide financial crisis can’t halt the usual noche buena celebration which is the highlight of Christmas season, where families gathered to celebrate the birthday of the Almighty while merrily eating together the traditional foods such as ham, macaroni salad, buko (young coconut) or fruit salad, gelatine, leche plan, grilled chicken, chicken/pork casserole, spaghetti, pansit, fruits in season, lechon and lots of sweets and fats LOL !

This party was almost a preview of the coming christmas festivities, nanay’s (mom’s) birthday. It was attended by the closest relatives and friends.

Hana Isabel, my niece, and her favorite pet, Tammy are also excited for the coming holiday season especially the midnight mass which is going to begin on the dawn of 16 December.

I will try to keep posting days before Christmas!

Happy Holidays everyone!

The free underwater photography was generously provided by Canadian scuba diver Ken Dawson. He and his diving buddies (Filipinos & foreigners alike) with their diving camera, frequent different dive spots in the Philippines several times a year to enjoy the beautiful Philippine underwater landscape and the rich marine life in the Philippines.

Daisypath Anniversary Years Ticker
binondo_church
Hi! I’m Back again..

Yesterday was different, instead of celebrating the Sunday mass in Imus Cathedral, my family instead did it in famous Binondo Church. This is not our first time here, because every Lenten season or Holy Week, this church is one of the 7 churches we visit to complete our “Visita Iglesia.”.

I remember, In late 80’s, I had wished for my first born to be a boy in one of Baguio churches, and it did come true. Now my eldest is 21 and God loves me so much that He gave me another boy, my younger one. I have not remember wishing for a girl, maybe because, I believe that it is easier for a parent to raise a gentleman than to raise a lady. (Maybe because I have noticed that my nanay spent more energy in raising her 2 girls, (me and my sister. LOL :-) )

Now that I am 52,and my husband is 53, and quite nearing our twilight years, still I do not regret of not having a daughter. My two boys know how to take care of the house and have a considerable cooking knowledge, so I am confident that even if I’m gone, they can take care of themselves. And most of all, we have equipped them with the best education we can afford. They were like, 3 and a half years old , when they started attending their formal training/education in nursery, kinder and prep years, and currently nearing their final years in their tertiary education in Lyceum of the Philippines University.

Anyway, above image is from the inside of the Binondo Church and below………… of my 2nd son, (Dragon Ball Z Character) taken during the creative photo session of the 2009 Mass Comm graduating class!

My next post, will feature the photograph of my First Born.

Nice evening everyone!
